A delegation of students and professors from the University of Eastern Finland visited the Valhalla Tree Farm in December 2023 as a part of their research exchange with WSU into the fields of forest ecology, forest management, forest planning, remote sensing, logistics of logging, and wood materials science. UEF Forestry Department focuses on building strong research, innovation, and education networks between Universities in the US and Finland. The sponsoring university here was Washington State University (WSU) Many thanks to WSU Professor Kevin Zobrist for recommending our farm as a showpiece of NW private tree farms.

The main focus areas of this joint venture was exchanging of information on smart forestry, bioproducts, wood construction, biorefining, ecosystems and business innovations such as our Valhalla ecotourism side business. The group is closely linked to research communities within UEF such as forest and Bioeconomy, Ecosystem and Health. The team is also closely linked to UNITE awarded by Academy of Finland as Flagship of Science and is an active member of Finnish American Research & Innovation Accelerator (FARIA), one of the global networks of the Ministry of Education and Culture of Finland

The School of Forest Sciences is an internationally renowned research and education unit and we were honored to show them around our tree farm. The UEF educates specialists for jobs in the forestry and environmental fields and offers scientific postgraduate education in the doctoral program in Forests and Bioresources.
Two thirds of the students are international students. The international reach of the program is further enhanced by exchange students and other visitors – over 100 international students or researchers who work yearly at the UEF. Their main fields of research are forest ecology, forest management, forest planning, remote sensing forests with laser scanning, logistics of logging, and wood materials science.

The group got acquainted in the lower parking lot before beginning the tour

It was late afternoon on a frosty December day.
Note the layer of fog above the wetlands and deer mountain illuminated in a pleasing shade of red-orange.
