Southeastern BC Trip
August 2013
This trip started out as a camping tour of Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper National Parks in Alberta Canada. When we got to the U.S. jumping off spot at Bonners Ferry, the weather outlook for the Canadian Rockies was dismal. Looking a little farther to the west, the British Columbia Kootenay Rockies looked to be an interesting area to explore. We had a week, a tent and no set itinerary. The plan went forward with the destination being a small village named Nakusp, two day's drive from the border. It had a hot springs run by the village, hiking, swimming and bicycling. The rest of the trip was a large loop back to the west and south to the US Border at Ossyous with a stop in Omak to see the Rodeo on the way home. |

Dave took a stroll and found himself between a mama bear and cubs. Luckily she was more interested in heading up the mountain with four cubs in tow and only gave Dave a passing glance. But it was a reminder that we were in Bear Country... |

First night in Canada! A cabin in a small town named New Denver on Slocan Lake. Tent camping opportunities were slim due to the vacation season and apparent emphasis on RV camping in BC. |

The hot springs were piped 1 Km to two pools, one 102F and the other about 88F. The deck views of the forested mountains were stunning. Mineral stoked water felt good but no running or splashing allowed! |

We talked to the guy who had this advertisement on his Jeep Cherokee. He claimed to be able to find placer gold deposits, hot springs and underground water. At the time of this picture, he was repairing the men's bathroom at the hot springs... |
Young 4-pointer buck was curious but kept his distance |

Nakusp is on the edge of Arrow Lake, near the headwaters of the Columbia River. We spent one afternoon swimming here. The water was great! |
On to Kelowna via this car ferry across Arrow Lake. Passengers are admiring a Model T driven by a couple of guys who were on a road trip from California |

Interesting winery motif at Rustico Cellars south of Penticton. They have over 400 acres of vines. Highly recommend their white blend which was available in a box! Website |

Spent the day swimming in the Okanogan River at Omak. It was 93 in the shade. In the background is the steep riverbank where the "suicide race" takes place. |
In the stands at the Omak Stampede rodeo. Lots of police have effectively quashed the "bad boy" reputation of this rodeo.

|
At the Omak Rodeo, this was an interesting 911 memorial on a trailer, complete with a guy to explain it. Had a girder piece from the 60th floor (this is about where the plane hit) and 5 bronze statues to represent the people that died. Note the lower half of the each person is burned. |
